HILDA L. SOLIS CARE FIRST VILLAGE
Located on a 4-acre site brownfield site near downtown Los Angeles, the facility provides 232 beds for people experiencing homelessness. Initiated as a repurposing of a site acquired to replace the Men’s Central Jail with housing services, the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic during the design process reshaped the project to be completed in record speed. Many strategies were discussed related to how to remediate the contaminated site.
A native garden surrounds the site to restore the brownfield site. Two lawns provide a place for passive recreation and informal gatherings. A series of decks within the native plantings offer a private space while being within a shared open space. Over 60 new trees were planted.
